India’s Koneru Humpy makes India proud, becomes World Rapid Chess champion for second time
India is doing proud in the world of chess as another player has won a big title after D Gukesh made India proud this year.
Koneru Humpy won the World Rapid Chess Championship and earned a historic second world title on Sunday. She defeated Indonesia’s Irene Sukandar. In 2019, she had won the event for the first time and is the only player besides China’s Ju Wenjun to clinch the titles multiple times in the format.
Humpy’s achievement is another feather in India’s chess cap. Her victory came two weeks after D Gukesh defeated China’s Ding Liren at the FIDE World Chess Championship in Singapore this month. He became the youngest-ever world chess champion at the age of 18. His previous achievements include becoming India’s youngest grandmaster at 12 and India’s no 1 at 17, breaking Vishwanathan Anand’s 37-year title. “I’m very excited and happy. In fact, I expected it to be a very tough day, like some sort of tie-break. But when I finished the game, the arbitrator told me (about winning), and it was a tense moment for me,” said Humpy, who began with black pieces, after her victory. Humpy has shown continuous excellence from the start of her game in Rapid championships, including winning a bronze at the Moscow event in 2012 and a silver in 2023 in Samarkand, Uzbekistan. The 37-year-old Indian No. 1 won after accruing 8.5 points over 11 rounds.
